NICAS LETTER – URGENT GOVERNMENT SUPPORT TO SAVE THE ACTIVITY SECTOR

NICAS accredited walls provide the backbone of indoor climbing tuition to nearly 15,000 young people every year across the UK and Ireland. Indoor climbing is one of the rare sports that show an equal representation between boys and girls, and can maintain interest during the problematic drop-out in sports around age 13. Losing access to climbing facilities overnight has had a major impact on walls and participants. We need people to be able to access their preferred sporting activity and re-establish their regular climbing habit as soon as possible. Despite the Government’s response and immense work underway within the industry, many walls still face closure and those that can open their doors will lack the ability to restart their coaching programmes without further support. We think that a national campaign supported by local events is needed to re-engage existing young climbers and inspire a new generation and will be seeking support to enable this. This will kickstart access to learning that can lead to a lifetime of sport and physical activity for participants, and it will help walls to re-establish a repeatable regular income.”
